The iconic fighting series finally arrives on a Nintendo console

Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage Switch 2 Review: Worth the Wait

Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage feels like a statement from Sega, in that it’s back in the fighting scene after lying dormant for several years. The Virtua Fighter series debuted in 1993 in arcades, then on the Sega Saturn, and it revolutionised how fighting games could transition to 3D.

With a simple control scheme that appeals to beginners and experts alike, it’s seen as the grandfather of 3D fighting games. But Virtua Fighter was slowly being seen as an ancient series, lost to time. R.E.V.O. World Stage, the latest update to 2005’s Virtua Fighter 5, attempts to modernise the title in several ways, and it succeeds, mostly.

March 26 heralded the game's release on Switch 2 for $19.99 / £15.99, which includes crossplay with its console and PC version, alongside DLC packs that let players fight as characters modelled from earlier Virtua Fighter entries, as well as being able to wear cosmetics from Bandai Namco's TEKKEN series. I've been playing this new port for the past week, and I've come away impressed. But with the series having been gone for so long, does Virtua Fighter matter in 2026?
