Why I’m Always Taking Screenshots in Games

Imagine the scene: you're in the throes of a deathmatch in Unreal Tournament or a fight in Tekken 8, and you know you're about to pull off the move to win. Then, suddenly, you do it, and with the press of a button, you've taken a screenshot of that moment, forever saved. That is just one example of why I love taking screenshots when playing games. I've been doing it for years, well before it was packaged up as 'Photo Mode' in several games.

Usually, I'll have a game playing in the background. This could be on my Mac, my iPhone, my TV, or my PS Vita. It always helps when I need to take a break, as an idea will usually come to me as I'm fighting Dark Jedi in Star Wars: Jedi Academy, or walking through Ravenholm in Half-Life 2 RTX.

When I set up an emulator or a game, I always make sure there's a hotkey set to take screenshots. This way, I can capture something in the moment, without wondering if I can rewind or if I took it in time. I've got countless folders of these screenshots, going as far back as 2019. One of the biggest is, understandably, Tomb Raider, having taken hundreds for the book, and the rest.

This week, I wanted to share a few below of what I've taken in the last several months. Some are of the moment, some are taken just because they look good. But all of them are snapshots that remind me of how much I'm enjoying the game at that moment in time.

If you're enjoying Springboard, I'd love it if you'd consider a small tip to help cover my monthly bills. (Follow the link and click 'change amount' to whatever you want).

I apologize if I overloaded your Mail app when it loaded all of the above images — but it was worth it, wasn't it?

I'm not sure if taking these images is a habit - more of a reflex action. I just press the screenshot key whenever I think it's a good time to take one. But it's fun, and they can be a great way to use as wallpapers or photo frames. Or just as a reference for something I'm working on.

Nevertheless, I know I'll be having a bunch more folders of these screenshots for the foreseeable. As I've already taken 5 more shots in the past 24 hours, don't be surprised to see another edition of this some time. Your Mail app will love it — all over again.
