50 Years of Boss Fights is a book I'm really proud of - but it didn't get much of a push when it came out in 2024. Much of that is on me - lots of things were going on, and as I was completely exhausted, other things had to take priority.

One of my aims for 2026 was to refocus on 50 Years of Boss Fights, hence this post. The book was commissioned towards the end of 2020, just as The Making of Tomb Raider was wrapping up. I've always loved fighting against and playing as bosses in games. From Dr. Robotnik in Sonic to Wheatley in Portal 2, there are plenty of highlights that I wanted to talk about.

But simply listing 51 bosses in a book felt boring to me. I wanted to reach out to a bunch of developers who were involved in creating some of them, which is what began a small quest to find out who made the very first boss, the Golden Dragon, in 1974's DND. I managed to find both involved, Gary Whisenhunt and Ray Wood, and they feature first in the book.

After that, I decided to go all out. After 18 months, the book managed to feature interviews with those involved in Bioshock, Donkey Kong Country 2, Super Mario 64, Portal 2, Half-Life, Star Fox, Pandemonium!, and many more. I'm proud of the book, and I want to put it back into the spotlight, as it approaches two years since its June 2024 release - so here's what I'm going to do:
