- Description: A return to the Itchy Tasty Trilogy is overdue

Halloween, or late October in general, has always been a great time to play some *Resident Evil* games. Some may play the latest game, *Requiem*, or perhaps [*Resident Evil 4 Remake*](https://www.nintendo.com/en-gb/Games/Nintendo-Switch-2-games/Resident-Evil-4-Gold-Edition-3183693.html?srsltid=AYCX9vJE7K9iKlW01-rrcdSXWZ2XAS%5FBia4dFDT%5FT22xhIq%5FISWq93te&ref=darylbaxter.com) now that it's available on the [Nintendo Switch 2](https://darylbaxter.com/posts/nintendo-switch-2-hands-on-review/). But for me, I've got a soft spot for the original trilogy.

My first entry point was the [*Resident Evil 2* demo](https://youtu.be/036W-uMXNc8?si=UBaw5YWO-9yqTJMm&t=1172&ref=darylbaxter.com) on an [Official PlayStation Magazine UK demo disc](https://crimson-ceremony.net/demopals/eurodemo/index.php?img=uk031&ref=darylbaxter.com#SCED-00827). There was a 10-minute timer, so I was trying to get as far as I could before it ran out - way before speedrunning was a thing! But *Resident Evil 3: Nemesis* is my favourite - from the choices you can pick when facing Nemesis at certain points to Mercenaries mode.

But the original trilogy, bar PC via [Steam](https://store.steampowered.com/app/4249120/Resident%5FEvil%5F3%5FNemesis%5F1999/?ref=darylbaxter.com) and [GOG](https://darylbaxter.com/posts/gog-preservation-program-interview/), is hard to play officially. I've got them on my [Retroid Pocket Nova](https://darylbaxter.com/posts/retroid-pocket-nova-review/), but I'd love to be able to play them on my Switch 2 - perhaps as a Digital Eclipse collection, à la [*Toy Story*](https://www.digitaleclipse.com/games/toy-story-retro-roundup-toy-story-3-complete-edition?ref=darylbaxter.com) and [*Mortal Kombat*](https://www.digitaleclipse.com/games/mortal-kombat-legacy-kollection?ref=darylbaxter.com). With this in mind, here's why *Resident Evil 1-3* should return.

## Back to the Clock Tower

I remember renting *Resident Evil 3: Nemesis* in late 1999, after reading about it in *GamesMaster* magazine. I can still do the first section unprompted - getting the lighter, reaching Raccoon City’s Police Station, then being faced with Nemesis, along with a choice.

> *Do I fight Nemesis or run inside to the police station?*

It felt different and fresh, something I hadn’t seen in a game before. I'd experienced non-linearity in *Tomb Raider* and *Metal Gear Solid*, but I'd never faced a choice that could change what the next section would be.

Locations like the City Hall area, the restaurant, and the Clock Tower with the monstrous spiders were all fun to explore. Then, once the game’s complete, you gain access to Mercenaries, an arcade-like mode that lets you choose a character and roam the city, racking up points to see if you can buy a secret weapon.

So imagine my disappointment in 2020 when the [*Resident Evil 3* remake](https://store.steampowered.com/app/952060/Resident%5FEvil%5F3/?ref=darylbaxter.com) came out, containing none of this. Instead, you’d face Nemesis at predetermined points, with no choices. Gone was the Clock Tower - just a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment in one scene - as well as Mercenaries mode.

It was a huge shame, and to me, it’s a great example of what not to do with a remake of an existing classic. It’s why the original *Resident Evil 3* is one of the first games I put onto PS1 and Dreamcast emulators when setting up some [gaming handhelds](https://darylbaxter.com/posts/retroid-pocket-duo-lite-review/). Facing enemies like the giant spiders, which [I wrote about in 2018](https://bloody-disgusting.com/editorials/3520126/editorial-ongoing-fear-video-game-spiders/?ref=darylbaxter.com), and everything else that the original brought, lets me enjoy it like it's 1999 all over again.

Even *Resident Evil 2*, a game I bought after completing the third game, is still a classic, but so is its 2019 remake. It's a great example of how a remake can be done; there are still players out there, myself included, who would love to play the original titles instead of needing a PlayStation console to download them, or using a PC via GOG or Steam.

The [*Tomb Raider: Remastered*](https://darylbaxter.com/posts/tomb-raider-iv-vi-remastered-review-out-of-the-darkness/) compilations are great examples: they were rebuilt from the source code to run on these systems while giving players the option to play with updated graphics. To me, Capcom should look to this for inspiration with the original *Resident Evil* trilogy.

## Deciding on Nemesis' choices in 4K

The first three *Resident Evil* games have a charm that today’s titles in the series lack. From the tank controls to the slow opening of every door you go through, each one is still a great time in 2026, and it’s a shame Capcom isn't interested in bringing them back. Instead, they want to focus on the *Resident Evil* remakes and erase what came before.

The original *Resident Evil* is a classic, and watching those complete the game in record time, like [the speedrun I saw back at Gamescom in August](https://youtu.be/%5Fl-S57YSO6I?si=KwyDkwJPcZdZQj1N&ref=darylbaxter.com), is always a treat. It's a reminder of how survival horror in games came to be, and while we can play the 2002 remake, it's important for game preservation that we can play these on modern consoles with ease.

Being able to play the PC ports on my Windows 11 laptop with no issues is refreshing, though. It’s a testament to [GOG](https://darylbaxter.com/posts/gog-preservation-program-interview/)’s effort that I can play them with my 8BitDo Pro 3 controller and change the controls to my liking.

But I’d love to see the same effort in a Switch 2 collection. For instance, have all three *Resident Evil* games support quick-save, redrawn background graphics, and perhaps a leaderboard for *Resident Evil 3*’s Mercenaries mode so you can see how your friends fare. It feels like an easy win, and it’s a shame that Capcom will likely never do it.

Now that *Resident Evil* *Requiem* is out, with DLC rumoured to be coming soon, what better way to celebrate the franchise's origins than to make the first three games available on modern platforms? If *Requiem* is the future, Capcom should honour the past with the games that made the franchise so iconic.
